Overall assessment: Bearish, but approaching a potentially important decision point.

Hotung's price structure has deteriorated substantially since the May peak of S$1.71. The stock has formed lower highs and lower lows, and the recent October recovery attempts have failed to sustain gains above S$1.55–1.58.

The latest session closed at S$1.47, near the bottom of its S$1.46–1.48 range. More importantly, it has moved below the repeatedly tested S$1.48 support area.

The central question is whether this represents the start of another markdown leg or an unsuccessful breakdown that could produce a recovery.

Major structural developments

1. May: Buying climax or exhaustion

The rally from S$1.43–1.50 accelerated toward S$1.70–1.71 with substantial volume expansion. Buyers initially had clear control, but price subsequently failed to extend above S$1.71.

The subsequent collapse toward S$1.54 demonstrated that the strong upward momentum was no longer sustainable. This was an important warning, although the reversal alone did not prove a completed market top.

2. June–August: Progressive loss of demand

The recovery toward S$1.68 failed to establish a new high. Subsequent rallies became progressively less effective, with peaks around S$1.67, S$1.61 and S$1.58.

This created a bearish lower-high sequence. Meanwhile, lows declined from approximately S$1.59 toward S$1.54.

3. September–October: Sellers gain structural control

The former S$1.54–1.55 support region failed to hold consistently. Price then repeatedly tested S$1.48 without producing a sustained bullish reversal.

The current move to S$1.47 places the market at a critical structural boundary.

The daily trend remains bearish unless buyers can reclaim broken resistance and begin forming higher lows.

2. Bar-by-bar analysis: Recent price action

The most important evidence comes from the sequence of candles since September, rather than from the latest red candle alone.

Phase A — September: Breakdown and unsuccessful recovery

Observation: Price slipped below the earlier S$1.54–1.55 support area and declined toward S$1.48. There were intermittent green candles, but bullish advances lacked persistence.

Interpretation: The sellers had begun making greater downward progress, while buyers struggled to regain previously defended territory.

The S$1.54–1.55 zone changed from support to overhead resistance.

Phase B — Early October: Volatility without sustained upward progress

Observation: Several relatively wide candles appeared, including attempts to rally toward S$1.58–1.61. However, these advances were quickly reversed or followed by further weakness.

Interpretation: The stock was attracting buying interest at lower prices, but this demand was insufficient to establish an upward trend.

Repeated upward failures indicate persistent overhead supply. This is not convincing accumulation without stronger subsequent evidence.

Phase C — Mid-October: Repeated tests of S$1.48

Observation: Several declines stopped around S$1.48. Recoveries generally stalled around S$1.50–1.55, with overlapping candles and little net upward progress.

Interpretation: The market had formed a short-term trading range near its lows.

The repeated tests have two possible meanings:

  • Bullish interpretation: Selling pressure may be diminishing as buyers absorb shares around S$1.48.

  • Bearish interpretation: Buyers are repeatedly defending the same level but cannot move price meaningfully higher, suggesting weakening support.

The inability to generate sustained upward movement currently favors the bearish interpretation.

Phase D — 23 October: Initial breakdown attempt

50% — midpoint

The candle opened at its high, tested S$1.46, and recovered to close at S$1.47.

What is bearish: The session failed to trade above its opening price and closed below the previously defended S$1.48 area.

What is less bearish: The close was at the midpoint rather than the session low. Buyers showed some response around S$1.46, and the candle was not a particularly wide-range downward expansion.

Next expectation: A further move below S$1.46 would strengthen the bearish case. A quick recovery above S$1.48–1.50 would instead suggest that the support breach may have failed.

A single close at S$1.47 is not sufficient confirmation of an accelerating breakdown.

3. Volume-price relationship

May breakout — strong effort, strong result

High trading activity accompanied the acceleration from approximately S$1.50 toward S$1.70. This initially supported the bullish breakout.

June–August — deteriorating upward progress

Despite occasional volume spikes, subsequent buying attempts did not overcome the previous major highs. Supply repeatedly interrupted advances.

September–October — generally subdued activity

Several recent declines occurred without particularly large volume expansion. This may indicate reduced buying interest rather than aggressive liquidation.

23 October — breakdown lacks strong volume confirmation

The latest volume bar appears small relative to several preceding spikes. The chart does not yet demonstrate a convincing high-volume breakdown below S$1.48.

Effort versus result

The important asymmetry is that upside rallies have encountered resistance, while price has nevertheless drifted progressively lower.

However, low-volume declines are not automatically bullish. They can reflect a lack of demand, especially when the stock cannot rally meaningfully away from support.

The evidence currently favors weak demand, but the exact daily volume figures are not visible, so this assessment is qualitative.

The most important near-term distinction is between a temporary move below S$1.48 and sustained acceptance below S$1.46.

5. Forward scenarios

Scenario A — Bearish continuation

Favored

Trigger: A daily close below S$1.46, ideally with expanding volume, followed by unsuccessful attempts to reclaim S$1.48.

Expected path: S$1.43 → S$1.40 → S$1.37–1.38.

Invalidation: A sustained recovery above S$1.50–1.52 would weaken this immediate bearish setup.

Scenario B — Failed breakdown and bullish reversal

Trigger: Price briefly breaks S$1.46, then recovers above S$1.48–1.50 with firm closes and improved buying participation.

Expected path: S$1.52 → S$1.55 → S$1.58.

Invalidation: Renewed weakness below the reversal low, especially a failure to hold S$1.46.

Scenario C — Sideways consolidation

Trigger: Price holds S$1.46–1.48 but remains unable to clear S$1.50–1.52.

Expected path: Continued overlapping candles and range-bound movement until either buying or selling establishes control.

Resolution: A sustained breakout above S$1.52 or breakdown below S$1.46.

6. Trade setup and risk management

At S$1.47, buying immediately is an anticipatory reversal trade against the prevailing daily downtrend. A confirmed reversal setup would offer a stronger technical basis.

These are conditional planning examples, not active trade signals. Entries require the relevant confirmation, stops must account for execution slippage, and the targets may encounter intermediate resistance or support. Short selling also depends on borrow availability and SGX trading arrangements.

For an existing long position, S$1.46 is the immediate defensive reference. The wider S$1.42–1.43 support zone matters for a longer holding period, but using a wider stop increases the capital at risk.

7. Final technical verdict

CURRENT OUTLOOK

Bearish — reversal not confirmed

23 October 2026 · Daily timeframe

Three developments to monitor:

  1. Below S$1.46: Further downside pressure, with S$1.42–1.43 as the next meaningful support region.

  2. Reclaim S$1.50–1.52: Early evidence that the latest breakdown has failed.

  3. Break and hold above S$1.55: More meaningful improvement in short-term market structure, opening the possibility of a recovery toward S$1.58–1.61.

Conclusion: Hotung is at a potentially important turning point, but the chart currently provides stronger evidence of persistent weakness than confirmed accumulation. The latest candle offers some evidence of buying near S$1.46, yet it has not reversed the bearish sequence.

I would prioritize waiting for a failed breakdown and successful reclaim of S$1.50 rather than trying to anticipate the bottom at S$1.47.
